At ISCI Foundation, we believe in empowering underprivileged communities to break free from the cycle of poverty and create sustainable livelihoods. On January 13, 2023, we took a step toward achieving this vision by organizing a meeting with women from disadvantaged backgrounds. The event focused on the formation of self-help groups (SHGs), a proven model for fostering economic independence, financial literacy, and social empowerment.
This gathering marked the beginning of a transformative journey for these women, setting the stage for collective growth and resilience in their communities.
Unveiling the Purpose: A Step Toward Collective Empowerment
The primary objective of this meeting was to unite women from underprivileged communities, providing them with a platform to collaborate and support each other. Self-help groups are an effective way to enable women to pool resources, build financial literacy, and gain access to economic opportunities.
By forming SHGs, we aim to:
Empower women with financial and entrepreneurial knowledge.
Foster a sense of community and collaboration.
Create sustainable livelihood opportunities through shared efforts.
Key Highlights of the Meeting
1. Raising Awareness about Self-Help Groups
The meeting commenced with an introduction to the concept of SHGs. The participants were educated on the benefits of collective savings, group-based microfinance, and how SHGs can serve as a springboard for entrepreneurship.
Stories of successful SHGs from other regions were shared to inspire confidence and demonstrate the model's impact. Women were encouraged to see themselves as agents of change, capable of driving financial and social progress in their families and communities.
2. Identifying Vocational Training Opportunities The discussion then shifted to identifying skills and interests among the participants. Many women expressed interest in activities such as tailoring, handicrafts, and food production, while others highlighted their existing expertise in these areas.
This session was crucial in helping us design vocational training programs tailored to the needs and aspirations of these women. These programs will focus on enhancing their skills, enabling them to explore new income-generating opportunities.
3. Building a Support Network Beyond financial benefits, SHGs create a sense of solidarity among members. The meeting provided an opportunity for women to share their challenges, experiences, and dreams with each other. This exchange fostered trust and laid the foundation for a supportive community where members can encourage one another and celebrate their successes together.
The Transformative Power of Self-Help Groups
Self-help groups have proven to be a powerful tool for empowering women across the globe. Their impact goes beyond financial gains, offering a range of benefits that include:
Economic Independence: SHGs provide access to financial resources, enabling women to start small businesses and contribute to their family income.
Skill Development: Training programs tailored for SHGs enhance members' abilities, making them more employable and entrepreneurial.
Social Empowerment: Women in SHGs gain a voice in their communities, becoming active participants in decision-making processes.
Confidence and Self-Reliance: The collective nature of SHGs instills a sense of belonging, boosting members' self-esteem and independence.
By empowering women, SHGs also contribute to broader societal benefits, including stronger families, healthier communities, and improved education for children.
Voices from the Community: Stories of Hope and Determination
The women who participated in the meeting brought with them inspiring stories of resilience and hope. For many, this was their first step toward envisioning a brighter future for themselves and their families.
"Joining a self-help group will give us the chance to learn new skills and support each other. Together, we can make a difference in our lives," said one participant, reflecting the optimism that defined the gathering.
Their enthusiasm and determination underscored the importance of providing platforms for empowerment, where women can recognize their potential and take control of their destinies.

Our next steps include:
Organizing vocational training programs based on the skills and interests identified during the meeting.
Providing financial literacy workshops to equip women with the knowledge to manage savings and access credit.
Facilitating access to microfinance opportunities to support entrepreneurial ventures.
Regularly monitoring and supporting the progress of the SHGs to ensure their success and sustainability.
